“Mint” to Be Once she had a ring on…
The Pines at Genesee Wedding
When Alison was transferred to Buffalo, New York, to work at a TV station, she knew no one. One night, while out with coworkers at a karaoke bar, she met Mark. At the time, he worked for another TV station in the city. He happened to be out with coworkers as well! The rest, as they say, is history. After about a year had passed, they decided it was time to make the move back to Colorado – Alison’s home state.
One Thanksgiving, the two of them were back in Buffalo visiting friends and family. On the following Saturday, Alison was with her best friend driving to brunch – or so she thought. Before too long, her friend dropped her off at her favorite place in Buffalo: Chestnut Ridge Park. As she got out of the vehicle, she saw Mark. He was waiting for her with roses! Then, he popped the question. Best Thanksgiving ever!
Wedding Dress Shopping in Denver
When it was time to find a wedding dress, Alison found herself feeling overwhelmed. For most of her life, she has been a huge fan of bridal TV shows. In her head, she HAD to have a ballgown by a specific well-known designer. As she started trying on dresses, she didn’t have much of an open mind – she was so set on that specific gown! However, the moment she tried on that dress that she couldn’t get out of her head, she didn’t love it. Although disappointed, she tried on a variety of styles.
Before long, Alison found herself in a stunning fit and flare Justin Alexander wedding dress. She wasn’t expecting to have a “moment” where she knew it was the one. However, as soon as she pulled the gown off the rack, she had a feeling that she was done looking. When she put it on, she didn’t want to take it off. There was nothing she wanted to change about it. That is how you know you’ve found “the one”! On her wedding day, she wore a Bel Aire Bridal headpiece to complement her gown.
“I think my favorite part of wedding planning was finding ways to incorporate all of our personal touches.”
While wedding planning, Alison realized it was important to incorporate as many personal touches as possible. She handmade almost every decoration – including signs and programs! During the ceremony, they tied an Irish Fisherman’s Knot. Under pressure, a Fisherman’s Knot doesn’t break, it gets stronger. Alison wanted this to be a symbol of their marriage. For wedding favors, they gave out Buffalo Sponge Candy as a nod to Mark’s hometown and where they met.
Other fun details included quotes from their favorite TV show – Parks and Recreation. Without knowing it before, Mark and Alison both ended their vows with “I love you and I like you” (a quote from the show). This line was also their cake topper! On their dessert table, the sign said “Treat Yo’ Self.”
When it came to accessories, Alison wore her mom’s earrings and her grandmother’s necklace. All of her cousins on that side of the family have worn the same pieces, so it was so special to continue that tradition.
Advice for Brides
“My advice to brides planning would be to take a deep breath and focus on the things that are important to you. Don’t let the small stuff stress you out. Mark and I decided when we first got engaged what the most important things to us were when it came to the wedding, then we mainly focused on that. Don’t let other people’s opinions change what you want for your wedding, because in the end it is about you and your soon-to-be husband, no one else!”
